How to Apply a Band-Aid Correctly

How to Use a Band-Aid Properly

A small band-aid should never be applied casually—applying it incorrectly can cause big problems. Have you ever had a wound that got worse after using a band-aid? Read on to learn the right way!

How to Apply a Band-Aid

1.Clean the Wound

Use normal saline or running water to rinse the wound, ensuring no debris, foreign objects, or contaminants remain.

2.Stop Bleeding and Disinfect

After drying, disinfect the wound with antiseptic solution or iodine tincture to prevent infection. Iodine tincture, with its low concentration and minimal irritation, can be used for disinfecting skin and mucous membranes in many cases.

3.Apply the Band-Aid

Once the wound is slightly dry, take out the band-aid, remove the packaging, and cover the wound. Place the absorbent pad directly over the wound, then gently press the adhesive strips on both sides to secure it. Adjust the tightness of the band-aid properly: it should not be too tight (which restricts blood circulation) or too loose (which causes it to fall off). Meanwhile, monitor the wound closely. If abnormal symptoms like redness, swelling, oozing, or fever occur, seek medical help immediately.

For fingers, joints, or uneven areas, you can DIY modifications to the band-aid for a more comfortable fit and better adhesion!

Precautions for Using Band-Aids

1.Do not apply for too long. Prolonged use in a non-breathable state can make the wound and surrounding skin turn white and soft,

thus causing secondary bacterial infection. Replace the band-aid once a day under normal circumstances.

2.For one-time use only. Band-aids are disposable products and should not be reused.

3.When replacing the band-aid, check the wound condition. Re-disinfect with iodine tincture if necessary. If redness, swelling, pain, or worsening inflammation occurs, consult a doctor promptly.

4.Do not apply too tightly. Excessive tightness can hinder blood circulation.

5.Keep the band-aid dry. Avoid water contact to prevent wound infection.

6.Band-aids are suitable for

initial aid and temporary dressing of small wounds, abrasions, incisions, and other superficial injuries only. They are not suitable for all types of wounds.
